IN SITU Lab in focus: West Region, Iceland

West Iceland, a region of breathtaking natural beauty, is experiencing a surge in its cultural and creative industries. Nestled on the northern edge of Europe, this diverse region boasts stunning landscapes, including beaches, glaciers, wetlands, and mountains.

With a population of approximately 16,700 across ten municipalities, West Iceland has traditionally relied on fisheries and agriculture. However, the burgeoning tourism sector is driving economic diversification.

Recognizing the significant potential of the creative industries, this is one of the goals of the Regional Plans of Action, in order to set collaborative efforts with government agencies, businesses, academics, and the public to foster growth. To address identified issues in the region, key priorities include:

  • Enhanced Support: Providing readily accessible advice and support for innovative cultural projects.
  • Cross-sectoral Collaboration: Fostering partnerships between creative industries and other sectors, such as tourism and technology.
  • Innovation Centers: Establishing dedicated centers to nurture creativity and innovation.
  • Early Exposure: Integrating innovation and creative industries into all levels of education.
