IN SITU report analyses CCIs within European innovation policies for non-urban areas
Most technological innovations are produced in an urban setting, but rural or non-urban areas are very often fertile ground for other types of innovation, such as organizational, social or institutional ones. The report, State of Policies and S3s on Innovation and CCIs in Non-urban Areas, produced within the IN SITU project, examined the extent to which cultural and creative work has been supported through the main policies in the EU innovation framework for non-urban areas.

Interactive seminar “Collaborate & Innovate: Boosting Creative Potential in Non-urban Regions!”
The Latvian Academy of Culture invites artists, arts managers and entrepreneurs, cultural professionals, researchers, educators, students, cultural policy-makers and anyone interested to join the collaborative interactive seminar hosted in partnership with the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts “Kr. Sarafov”. The seminar is taking place on 24-25 April 2024, as part of the Horizon Europe IN SITU project that supports the work of creative and cultural industries in non-urban areas of Europe.
The IN SITU capacity-building programme: An ongoing path towards the empowerment of cultural agents in non-urban areas

From 19 to 21 February 2024, the IN SITU partners came together in Galway, Ireland – one of the IN SITU Lab locations – to analyse and discuss the present state of research and practice, as well as to jointly plan the next chapters of this dynamic Horizon Europe-funded project (Grant Agreement no. 101061747). This in-presence working meeting, themed “Contributions and Diversifications,” was hosted by the local IN SITU partner, the University of Galway (UG).
New IN SITU survey investigates the innovation potential of CCIs in non-urban areas
IN SITU announces the launch of a survey investigating the innovation potential of cultural and creative industries in non-urban areas. Focusing on IN SITU’s six Lab regions, the survey aims to discover CCI subsectors with high innovation potential, capable of acting as catalysts for economic development and significantly contributing to socioeconomic growth and sustainability in the EU.
Creative Industry Workshops in Galway: “Elevate your Innovative and Creative Potential in Non-urban Areas!”
The University of Galway’s UrbanLab is inviting artists, creative people and anyone interested to join a series of free workshops hosted in partnership with the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts from Sofia, Bulgaria. The workshops are taking place on 22-23 February 2024 as part of the Horizon Europe IN SITU project that supports the work of the creative and cultural industries in non-urban areas of Europe.
Unveiling diversification potential and resilience: Paths for cultural and creative activities in non-urban regions
The investigations carried out in the latest reports from the University of Utrecht within their work for the IN SITU project underscore the importance of identifying and supporting occupations and trademarks related to cultural and creative activities, encouraging local policy interventions to foster growth and innovation, especially in non-urban regions. The insights derived can inform policymakers and inspire further research, providing a valuable evolutionary perspective on navigating challenges in the creative and cultural sector.
IN SITU Lab: In focus – the Western coastal periphery, Ireland
The Western coastal periphery of Ireland is a region that includes Galway County and City, Roscommon County and Mayo County and has a vibrant cultural and creative industries sector, particularly around traditional and contemporary music, theatre and performance as well as a significant cluster of film and television production companies.
IN SITU gender report points out the opportunity for the cultural sector to act as role model for gender equality in non-urban areas
With the report “Gender dimension of CCIs in non-urban areas“, IN SITU publishes an important view on inequalities and discrimination based on gender in the cultural and creative sector that attempts to move away from a urban-centric perspective in order to focus on rural areas. The report was developed by the IN SITU research team of the University of Hildesheim with the support of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and of the IN SITU Lab partners, whose networks made it possible to conduct qualitative interviews.
